Manthan is a compelling drama based on real events centred on the co-operative revolution that happened in the Indian state of Gujarat during the 1970s. It was co-produced by 500,000 farmers who paid 2 Rupees each towards the making of the film.

Set among a community of small-scale milk producers, the film portrays the efforts of veterinary surgeon Dr Rao (Girish Karnad) to set up a co-operative owned by villagers in order to improve their condition by making them self-sufficient. The film won several national awards and it was India’s official entry to the 1976 Academy Awards.
